
Italian wine is made in every region of the country. Italy has the world’s most diverse range of native grape varieties, with 702,000 hectares of vineyards. As of 2023, it ranks as the second-largest wine producer globally and the top exporter.
In 2022, Italy produced 49.8 million hectoliters of wine, accounting for more than 19.3% of global output, surpassing France (17.7%) and Spain (13.8%). However, the following year, production dropped by 11.5 million hectoliters, allowing France to take the lead.
Italian wine is also widely enjoyed within the country. On average, Italians consume 46.8 liters of wine per person each year, making Italy the third-largest country in the world for per capita wine consumption.
